Lib Dem Councillors have been working hard to help local shops fight the recession and strengthen Claygate's reputation as a unique place to shop. Cllr Steve Wells hosted a meeting of businesses in and around The Parade to discuss how they might work together to market a Claygate Village Shopping Experience. Proposals being considered include a Claygate loyalty card scheme and farmers market.
Cllr Steve Wells said "Claygate is one of the few places in Elmbridge to have an independent fishmongers. There are butchers, bridal shops, delicatessens, and niche shops such as interior design. As a long-standing Claygate resident I know that thriving businesses are fundamental to our local community."
The three Lib Dem Councillors in Claygate are negotiating with Elmbridge Borough Council to modify parking arrangements to resolve existing problems. Cllr Steve Wells and Cllr Michael Courtney have also underwritten a Claygate Experience Bag for Life which will help reduce waste.
